The Dam of Hamsters
March 13, 2010Ah Amsterdam, how I wish I was still there! The graphics lot and I had a fantastic time in the city with a few of us renting bikes for the purpose of seeing more of the city, and really experiencing the Amsterdam way of life. We had one free day before the project began so we just spent some time exploring the city, and visited Anne Frank House. This was fairly expensive as there was no student price, but it was quite eerie walking around the rooms Anne and her family stayed in with the pictures still on the walls, but well worth the visit.
For the project we split of into pairs and were given an area of the city to base it on. Connie and I ironically had the area within which Anne Frank House was located! This was a bit of a shame as we’d already spent some time in the area and it would have been nice to see some more of the city. But either way it was great fun riding around on our bikes and getting lost…a lot. Turns out yes it is a quicker form of getting around, but much easier to get lost as you cannot just stop and look at the map without nearly crashing!
As we had the bikes we thought we could utilise this within our project somehow. So on day one of the project Connie, and I, along with our faithful steeds Wedgie and El Diablo set off for the start of our route.
After riding around taking photos and generally enjoying the scenery we came up with the idea of creating an online blog through the eyes of our bikes acting as escorts to tourists in Amsterdam. This was a fun way of showing the city through a different point of view, and ran well with the theme of Anne Franks Diary, thus creating a connection with the project and one of the key aspects of our route.

Feel free to leave your comments and I’m sure they will get back to you as soon as possible!
The whole area was around the Prinsenstraat canal and was the rather more cultured edge of town with a mix of cafe’s, museums, art galleries and had a nice eclectic mix of both tourists and locals enjoying the day.
A good time was had by all in Amsterdam, I just regret not being there longer so I could have seen a few more of the sites. I suppose I’ll just have to go back
